A Ceremonial Opening

The High Road School of Massachusetts opened its doors in the midst of last school year. However, October 28, 2011 marked the Grand Opening to the larger public with a special Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. This symbolic celebration was a toast to both the programs’ current and future accomplishments. Notable guests joining the event included Olga Garriga, Out of District Coordinator for Brocton Public Schools, Carolan Sampson, Out of District Coordinator for Stoughton Public Schools and Greg Marancik, Director of Operations, SESI/High Road Schools.

What types of things to do like to do?
I love to ride horses, go to the library, watch movies, go shopping and read books. Jewelry like peals and diamonds interest me. I also like learning about Geography and I’m learning to like Math. To relax, I enjoy candles and getting massages.

LAUREL, Md. – March 21, 2011 – Kelly Coffey used to agonize over reading about extreme Rollerblading more than he’d worry about popping an “Ollie” or pulling a mid-air “Indy.” At 16, Kelly could skate like a champ, but he said he could barely read.
“I would just look at the pictures in my extreme Rollerblade or BMX bike magazines then shove them off to the side. I didn’t care about reading,” said Coffey, of Jessup, Md. “But, reading doesn’t intimidate me anymore. I’ve done a ‘180.’ I have more confidence in myself when I see words on a page.”

Recently PG public access tv came to our school to showcase the increased technology at our school. Both Ms. Anyanwu and Ms. Mercer were interviewed in addition to two of our students. Specifically, the smartboards, and Ipad technology being implemented in the classrooms were highlighted. It was very exciting to have the opportunity to demonstrate how this technology has motivated, and made learning fun/interactive for our students. The segment has already aired. However, stay tuned as we will soon be able to post the finished product on this website!!

A special education school in Lanham has begun using state-of-the-art technology to teach its students, many of whom have learning disabilities ranging from dyslexia to autism.
"The students flock so much to technology," school administrative head Corrine Anyanwu said. "They get to do something fun that they feel confident in doing, and they're learning at the same time. They really look forward to it."

Apple iPads are the latest instructional tools being used to motivate and educate special needs students at High Roads schools and Sierra Academies across the nation, operated by Specialized Education Services, Inc. (SESI) of Yardley, Pa.
Teachers say the new tablet computers – introduced into the curriculum at the start of the current school year in September – offer a broad range of educational uses in an easy-to-use device and have become a powerful learning incentive for students with learning disabilities.

When Harrisen Tilery was in public school he had difficulty with math and reading and was struggling very hard to keep up with his peers. Rozco Barraza-Gutierrez is a student at Sierra School at Edison and he is also an Aztec Dancer. Rozco began dancing when he was 8 years old. He is now almost 12 years old and has been performing with the same troupe for all these years. Rozco’s group performs anywhere from 3 – 4 times each month for many types of occasion.
